If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping on the surface of Mars without leaving Earth, The Bubble House at Basecamp Terlingua is as close as it gets. Located in the heart of the rugged Chisos Mountains region, this isn't just "glamping" it’s a front row seat to the Milky Way, wrapped in a transparent sphere.

The Journey: From Chisos Peaks to Desert Valleys
My adventure began with a morning hike at the Lost Mine Trail in the Chisos Mountains. After soaking in the panoramic views of Pine Canyon, I hopped in the car for the descent.
The drive from the Lost Mine Trailhead to the Bubble House takes approximately 48 minutes. It is a breathtaking transition as you move from the high altitude greenery of the National Park down into the raw, dusty beauty of the Chisos Basin and finally into the quirky, off grid atmosphere of Terlingua.

What is a Bubble House?
A "Bubble House" is a unique architectural marvel designed for ultimate immersion in nature. These are climate controlled, inflatable spheres made of high quality, transparent materials.
The concept is simple: remove the walls that separate you from the desert. You get the comfort of a luxury hotel room complete with a plush bed and modern amenities while being fully exposed to the vast Texas sky and the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains.

Inside the Deluxe Bubble (The Experience)
Based on the official Basecamp Terlingua specs, I stayed in the Bubble X series. Here is what makes these units so special:
The Layout: Unlike a simple tent, the X series bubbles (X2, X3, and X4) are sophisticated suites. They feature a large, transparent bedroom "bubble" connected to private, opaque areas for privacy.
The facilities are very complete, including:
  • Full climate control (AC and Heat) to handle the desert's extreme temperature swings
  • A private bathroom with a shower and toilet
  • A cozy seating area and a small kitchenette
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Private outdoor hot tub
  • Personal BBQ grill for sunset dinners.

The Highlight:
The Bubble X2 specifically offers an incredible balance of intimacy and space. The stargazing experience is unparalleled; lying in a real bed while watching shooting stars across one of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states is something I’ll never forget.
